Aaron Bezzina
Aaron Bezzina, a prominent Maltese artist, made his debut in the art world in 2012 and quickly advanced to the international stage. His significant break came in 2015 during his MFA in Digital Arts at the University of Malta, when he was chosen for a prestigious residency organised by the European Investment Bank in Luxembourg, mentored by Turner prize-nominated artist Darren Almond.
This experience not only put him in direct contact with the international art community but also led to his work being added to the Bank’s permanent collection. His subsequent internship with Nuova Icona in Venice in 2016 further solidified his connections in Italy, paving the way for his participation in the Venice Biennale of Architecture and the Malta Pavilion at the Venice Biennale the following year.
A key figure in contemporary art
Bezzina’s career continued to flourish with numerous residencies and exhibitions across Europe and beyond, including projects in Treviso and Quero-Vas under the auspices of the Luciano Benetton Foundation, as well as residencies in Lithuania and Athens that expanded his international exposure. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, he participated in the UN/MUTE virtual artist residency in New York, culminating in an exhibition at the Austrian Cultural Forum in Manhattan.
Most recently, Bezzina was selected to create a site-specific work for the Malta Biennale, further establishing his reputation as a key figure in contemporary art.
